Key Fields

Strategic Excellence: Where UJEP Research Shapes the Region’s Future.

Smart Specialization

Technology and knowledge transfer cannot be effective if it is too fragmented. At CTTZ UJEP, we are guided by the principle of “Smart Specialization” (S3 strategy). This means we concentrate our capacities in areas where the university has top-tier scientific results and where there is strong demand from regional industry and society. This targeted approach allows us to create deep competence hubs that are attractive to investors and international research networks. Our priorities are directly linked to the process of transforming the Ústí Region from a coal region into a leader in sustainable technologies.

Advanced Materials

One of the most significant pillars of transfer at UJEP is the field of chemistry and materials science. Our laboratories generate innovations in nanotechnology, functional surfaces, and catalysts.

  • Applications: Development of new materials for water and air filtration, antibacterial surfaces for healthcare, or high-efficiency materials for energy (e.g., hydrogen technologies).
  • Potential: According to meta-analyses of the nanomaterials market (e.g., Global Market Insights), demand for these technologies is growing at a rate of 12% annually. CTTZ acts as an intermediary, connecting these “high-tech” results with the chemical and engineering industries in the region, thereby increasing their technological level.

Environment

Given the historical heritage of Northern Bohemia, UJEP is a natural leader in environmental technologies. Our transfer in this area focuses on remediation, reclamation, and biodiversity protection.

  • Circular Economy: We develop methodologies for efficient waste management and its transformation into secondary raw materials.
  • Bioremediation: Utilizing microorganisms and plants to clean contaminated soils is a unique piece of know-how that we offer through CTTZ to mining and energy companies undergoing downsizing. This type of knowledge transfer is crucial for the socio-technical transformation of the region and its return to a sustainable landscape.

Health and Society

Transfer at UJEP is not limited to technical fields. Life Sciences and social innovation are very strong domains.

  • Healthcare: In cooperation with Krajská zdravotní, a.s., we transfer new diagnostic procedures and nursing methodologies into clinical practice.
  • Aging Population: We develop solutions for the so-called “Silver Economy”—technologies and services that improve the quality of life for seniors.
  • Social Transformation: CTTZ supports the transfer of methodologies for working with socially excluded localities. This “soft transfer” is scientifically proven to be a necessary prerequisite for the economic stability of transforming regions, as it increases social cohesion and the attractiveness of the territory for new talent.

Digital World

Industry 4.0 and digitalization are horizontal priorities that permeate all our activities. CTTZ facilitates transfer in artificial intelligence, Big Data analysis, and virtual reality.

  • Industrial Application: We connect our cybernetics experts with manufacturing enterprises to implement predictive maintenance and automation.
  • Creative Industries: The unique combination of design and technology at UJEP allows for transfer in visual communication and digital media, giving rise to new forms of business in the creative sector.

Interdisciplinary Synergy

However, the true strength of CTTZ lies in interdisciplinarity. We believe that the greatest innovation leaps occur at the intersection of fields—where nanomaterials meet medicine or where environmental sciences work with design. Our role is to connect these worlds. CTTZ creates a platform where UJEP’s various domains of excellence merge into complex solutions ready for the real world. The future does not belong to isolated scientists, but to collaborative ecosystems that CTTZ actively builds.
